Physiol. 226(Z) : 452-457’ 1974.-When sartorius muscles of frogs are soaked in Ringer at room temperature, they gain Na, lose K, and lose contractility with time. These changes are retarded by stretching the muscles to ZO-30Y0 of their rest length. Conditions which inhibit the Na pump, such as soaking muscles in ouabain, K-free, or cold Ringer, abolish the differences in ionic contents and contractility between stretched and unstretched muscles. However, ouabain and K-free Ringer accelerate and cold retards the changes that occur in unstretched muscles in Ringer at room temperature. The results suggest that stretch stimulates the Na pump, either directly or indirectly through its effect on general metabolism. Contractility lasts longer in those muscles whose K contents are increased either by stretch or by different conditions of soaking.

متن کاملNa Extrusion by the Sartorius of Rana pipiens
Sartorius muscles of R. pipiens may be enriched in sodium and depleted of potassium by prolonged soaking in the cold in K-free or low K Ringer's solution. Such K-depleted muscles take up potassium and extrude sodium when exposed to Ringer's solution containing 10 mM K at ordinary room temperature (ca. 20 degrees C), with no dependence on external Na ion concentration in either phase within fair...
متن کاملInteraction of hydrocortisone with ATP and adenosine on nerve-mediated contractions of frog skeletal muscle.
The inhibitory effects of ATP and adenosine on the nerve-mediated contractile responses of isolated sartorius muscle of the frog, Rana ridibunda, evoked by electrical field stimulation (EFS) were studied using pharmacological organ-bath technique. The effects of hydrocortisone applied in vitro and in vivo on contractility of sartorius muscle were also examined. ATP (100 microM) significantly re...
متن کاملEnergy liberation and chemical change in frog skeletal muscle during single isometric tetanic contractions
Recent data obtained from Rana temporaria sartorius muscles during an isometric tetanus indicate that the time-course of phosphocreatine (PC) splitting cannot account for the total energy (heat + work) liberation (Gilbert et al. 1971. J. Physiol. (Lond.) 218:)63). As this conclusion is important to an understanding of the chemical energetics of contraction, similar experments were performed on ...
متن کاملThe effect of aqueous extract of pomegranate seed on rat uterine smooth muscle contractility
Introduction: Considering the importance of uterine contractions in uterus retraction and reducing post-partum hemorrhage and the current findings on the effect of the alcoholic extract of pomegranate seed on the uterine contractility, only few studies were made on this issue. In the present study the cumulative effect of the aqueous extract of pomegranate seed on the uterine smooth muscle c...
